    Challenging the Traditional Concept of Maintenance Agreements 

It is a commonly held belief that a maintenance agreement is a pre-requisite for businesses with ICT equipment. At Restore it we believe that for most SMEs a traditional maintenance agreement does not represent the most efficient method of support.

Why?  Well, traditionally, a maintenance agreement covers specified hardware and/or software on a reactive basis - ie in the event of failure.  Many ICT issues are not necessarily caused by hardware failure, plus a maintenance agreement tends to assume that the customer is able to undertake basic preventative maintenance themselves that may avoid many minor problems becoming critical.

SMEs typically have limited ICT internal expertise; problems often arise at the initial point of contact where the SME maybe technically unable to convince the maintainers that the issue is covered.  In the event that the maintainer makes a call to site and the issue is not covered by the agreement, a fairly expensive call out charge will probably be due.  Also, what happens if the maintainer attend site but cannot obtain the parts to effect an immediate repair?  Maintenance contracts may give a callout performance deadline but do not guarantee a 'fix'.
